The San Jose Giants, already gloomy after a sub-par season, have more bad news.

Japanese Heritage Night in San Jose, CA started off as good publicity for the Giants. However, a failed attempt at humor from their public relations team put them in a bad light.

Three members of the team were recorded in traditional Japanese attire. CBS reports that the players were encouraging Asian stereotypes in the gif.

“The man on the left was doing karate kicks, the player in the middle was bowing with his palms together, and the one on the right was fanning himself.”

The gif, which was posted by the teams official Twitter account, was circulated for two weeks before it was taken down, according to the Mercury News. The publication furthered that this stunt was particularly unexpected from the Giants because they are from the “region that practically invented political correctness”.

The Giants apologized describing its “message on social media” as “tone deaf.” Many fans, however, were not happy. Asian communities have made tremendous effort to detach themselves from such stereotypes that the Giants were endorsing.
