Critical Year for Fresh Off the Boat

Fresh Off the Boat Season 4 premier2

Fresh Off the Boat opens season 4 tonight with some additional star power.

Joining Randall Park and Constance Wu will be Wheel of Fortune’s Pat Sajak and Vanna White.

Singer and songwriter Michael Bolton also returns.

The show airs in its new time slot, 8:30/7:30 Central right before Blackish.

It’s a natural pairing given that Fresh Off the Boat has proven popular among African Americans.

Ratings for Fresh Off the Boat dropped 11 percent last season and 22 percent the year before.

Despite its struggles, ABC gave the program a fourth season.

FOTB has been hampered by constant adjustments to its schedule. It’s been moved so many times, frankly I can’t remember what time slot or time slots it had last season.

If it can get through the fourth season and get a season 5, that will be significant.

That usually means the show will go into syndication and the exploits of Louis, Jessica and the boys will be seen for years to come.

Think back to year one of the show. Asian American rallied behind it, throwing viewing parties and kicking up a Twitter storm with each episode. It was common that first season to see Fresh Off the Boat trending.

After four seasons, the show generates less buzz and frankly, many Asian Americans may even take the show for granted.

The landscape is much different in Hollywood that it was four years ago. Seeing an Asian American family on TV was an event for many. Now, while not common place, its much less surprising.Fresh Off the Boat

Tonight’s episode finds Jessica competing on Best Friends Week of Wheel of Fortune with Honey. The Huangs are still homeless, as you might recall, they sold their home last season expecting to move to a mansion, only later deciding they wanted to return to their former lifestyle.

Eddie starts high school, but finds the adjustment difficult as he appears still on the outs with many of his friends.
