Protest from Pacific Islanders Forces End to Moana Sketch

Moana and MauiA comedy troupe made up of students from Brigham Young University has decided not to go ahead with a sketch that parodied the Disney movie Moana following a protest from Pacific Islanders, reports the  Salt Lake Tribune.

The skit combined music from the movie with elements from a film from the Mormon church about a Polynesian woman deemed ugly and not marriage material until a huge dowry is offered for her hand.

The movie Johnny Lingo was once a regular part of Mormon teachings, but is now considered outdated-although it can still be found on You Tube.

Heilala Potesio with the Utah Pacific Islander Civic Engagement Coalition said Johnny Lingo is loaded with racist stereotypes.

“They didn’t know the extent to which that would offend that population,” said George Nelson, a faculty adviser to BYU’s Divine Comedy.
