The Asian American community has taken a step to help DACA, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, recipients after the Trump administration announced that the program would be abolished.

According to NBC News, one month after the announcement, the Asian Pacific Policy and Planning Council (A3PCON) opened up free programs to help the recipients overcome the mental anxiety and trauma that they are going through.

The Los Angeles based organization has partnered with ten mental health organizations to provide the services. The DACA recipients are eligible for “free counseling, case management, and other mental health services through the DACA Mental Health Project”.

They offer services in 12 languages including Japanese, Chinese, Hindi, Urdu, and Thai.

A3PCON co-chair Connie Chung Joe emphasized that the DACA recipients were in need of mental health services at this time because of a lack of trust in the government with their personal information.

“We wanted to make it particularly clear that we would find a way to serve DACA recipients regardless of whatever Medi-Cal qualifications or status, without having to [worry] about getting the government involved,” she said.

Asians make up 10 percent of the population that is eligible for DACA. Without having to hesitate about visiting doctors and therapists, this program will positively impact the lives of many Asian Americans.

South Asian Network executive Shikha Bhatnagar adds that this program is necessary because “they feel their information might be in jeopardy, and they might be deported” if they take advantage of federal services.
