Updated: Missing Child Found Dead. Adoptive Parents in Court for Custody Hearing

3-year-old Sherin Mathews has apparently been found dead two weeks after her disappearance

One day after their adopted daughter was apparently found dead less than a mile from their home, Wesley Mathews and his wife were in court today to fight for custody of their biological daughter, reports WFAA

3-year-old Sherin Mathews has been missing for two weeks since her father sent her out at 3 a.m. alone in a back alley as punishment for not drinking her milk.

Yesterday, authorities in Richardson, Texas found the body of who they presume to be Sherin in a culvert a half mile from the family’s home.

The body has not yet officially been identified.

Wesley Mathews walked into a courtroom today for a custody hearing for his 4-year-old biological daughter, but offered no comment to reporters on the latest developments. He is facing child endangerment charges, but is out on bond under electronic surveillance.

Sherin’s mother also arrived in the courthouse with a separate attorney from her husband. She too had no comment. The judge postponed the hearing until November 13 to allow Wesley time to hire an attorney.

The couple’s 4-year-old biological daughter was taken into state custody shortly after the father’s arrest.

Fox4 reports the South Indian community has followed this case closely.

“We didn’t want this to come this way. We didn’t want this to happen in this manner. We thought we would find her alive,” said Omar Siddiqi, a search volunteer, about the apparent discovery of Sherin’s body.
