An internationally acclaimed Japanese American photographer who was born in Chicago just days after the atomic bomb drop on Hiroshima and Nagasaki has died of colon cancer, reports the Albuquerque Journal.

Patrick Nagatani took on such dark subjects as the incarceration camps and nuclear bombs. He was known for his use of landscapes, military sites and even Japanese tourists to form mythical compositions.

Tributes quickly hit social media shortly after his death at his home in Albuquerque on Friday.

“We mourn the loss of this great talent and send our condolences to his friends and family,” said Densho.

“Harwood and its staff were impacted by the life and work of Patrick Nagatani in myriad ways,” said the Hartwood Art Center in New Mexico. Patrick will be deeply missed by our community, and we will be forever grateful for his presence in our lives. Our thoughts are with his wife Leigh Anne Langwell, son Methuen, and the entire Nagatani family.

“Farewell to the master,” wrote Fernando Delgado. “Patrick Nagatani was one-of-a-kind. Beyond the brilliant artist and venerated teacher was a kind soul and in his presence you always felt special.”

Nagatani taught at the University of New Mexico from 1987 to 2007. Among his many honors were Visual Artist Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and photographer’s fellowship from the Aaron Siskind Foundation.
