Daughter Speaking Hmong to Mom Stands Up to Woman’s Ridicule

Walmart Incident in WisconsinWhat is it about a foreign language that makes people feel uncomfortable?

A daughter was speaking both Hmong and English to her mom in a Walmart in Appleton, Wisconsin when she was approached by a White woman who wasn’t pleased they were speaking a language she couldn’t understand.

Jasmine Xiong posted a video of the incident on her Facebook page.

” If you live here in America, speak the language,” the woman said to the pair.

Jasmine wasn’t going to take it, as you’ll see in this video.

The video has been shared 3700 times and liked 4700 times.

One commenter said “Sadly this is what America will become UNLESS all the many Asian American and non Asian American friends we have speak out.”

Another said “She was expecting you both not to be educated in both languages and that this would be her moment to step on others and feel dominant, disgusting. You ladies have the freedom to speak whatever language you wish.”

Still others commented that the woman appeared under the influence.

One actually said he actually felt bad for the woman.

  1. RE: Daughter speaking Hmong to Mom Stands up to Woman’s Ridicule: Has English been legally and officially made as America’s language? Because America is built by and with a diverse ethnic population, all languages are part of the AMERICAN language set. I bet if someone were speaking any of the other European languages this would not have happened.

Only white people afraid. I’m from a diverse Asian country and we hear unknown languages all the time. Never occurred to us that that’s something threatening. Most of my countrymen would find it odd that there are people who feel uncomfortable hearing foreign languages spoken around them.

    • RE: Daughter Speaking Hmong to mom Stands up to woman’s ridicule: Your comment is almost as racist as the women’s actions.
