Somewhere, in a galaxy relatively close by, actress Kelly Marie Tran absolutely slays her role as the newest member of the Resistance in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
I saw the film yesterday, and without revealing any deadly spoilers, I would like to say that Kelly’s character of Rose Tico, a simple mechanic working near the pod bay, steals the show when she decides to aid in a stellar heist to save the galaxy in the name of the Resistance. She plays a main role in the movie, starring next to everyone’s favorite former stormtrooper Finn (played by John Boyega).
Rose Tico is the fresh-faced newcomer with her own take on the religion of the Force. She optimistically believes that good will prevail if you fight for love… I am simply starstruck. I loved her instantly. As a character, Rose is earnest. She is willing to sacrifice everything to show that she too can become one of the heroic members of the Resistance while working with General Leia Organa to defeat the Dark Side’s corrupted First Order. And, most importantly, the actress of Kelly Marie Tran lends the part new meaning when it comes to including diversity in the Star Wars franchise. More women of color for the win!
I found the movie, overall, to have one overlying theme: anyone can be a hero. You don’t have to be the child of Han Solo and Leia Organa (hint to the twisted Kylo Ren/Ben Solo), in order to be the “Chosen One” in the Star Wars universe. You can have simple, humble origins and still save the galaxy. From simple mechanics to former-Dark-Side stormtroopers, anyone can be a hero if you just fight for what you love.
