Nathan Chen did not disappoint in the men’s short program at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in San Jose Thursday night.
The heavy favorite landed his trademark quadruple jumps, although he admittedly played it safe.
Rather than go for the dazzling five jumps he has hit in the past, he went for just two.
He still scored a 104.45 to land in first place.
Adam Rippon and Jason Brown followed in second and third.
“I did a little bit of a watered-down program with no lutz,” he said to USA Today. “It was just a percentage thing. Lutz is not my forte. I went with my two safest jumps today.”
Vincent Zhou under rotated his quadruple flip and he landed on the ice attempting a triple axle. He still managed a fifth place finish with the help of a big-value quadruple lutz-triple toe loop combination jump, according to the Mercury News.
Zhou appeared calm after his mishaps.
“I was way into the program,” he said.
