Basketball Game Suspended following Racial Taunts

CATEGORIES

Elder High SchoolA high school basketball game had to be suspended after students began directing racial slurs at an Asian American and African American basketball player in Cincinnati, reports Cincinnati.com.

‘Hey No. 2, open your eyes,'” students from Elder High School are accused of chanting at a multiracial Asian player. “‘Hey, No. 2 can you open them bigger?'” the mom of the St. Xavier High School player said they were chanting. “PF Chang,” they yelled in reference to the Asian fusion restaurant chain.

Raw Story reports the Elder students also directed taunts at a Black player, accusing him of being a crack addict on welfare and of being fat.

“Very quickly, the cheers turned to what I phrased as microaggressions and racial slurs,” said Mina Jefferson about the jeers targeting her son.

Parents expressed outrage that the taunts were allowed to continue for as long as it occurred. The situation got so out of hand that by the third quarter, officials called off the game this past Friday.

The principal of Elder High School said he was out of town and did not attend the game. By Monday, he apologized to parents of both St. Xavier players who were targeted.

“I apologize on behalf of Elder, and I regret that the students behaved in such a manner as to insult your son, your family, and so many good people associated with St. Xavier as well as embarrass Elder,” Ruffing said.

Susan Stockman, the parent of the Asian player, called the apology a “day late and a dollar short.”

  1. RE: Basketball Game Suspended Following Racial Taunts: I’m so glad the young persons mother said that. We need to stop taking Ooopps I have been found out so I need to apologize BS. I hope those young people keep their heads up and keep moving forward and not get discouraged when they find out nothing is going to happen to those racist insensitive human beings. Sadly we have to live among people like that but we don’t have to let them steal our joy or power.

  2. RE: Basketball Game Suspended Following Racial Taunts: The refs should dropped from their job. After the first warning, it should be point penalties. By the time the game got called off, That should be an AUTOMATIC FORFEIT!
