Big Sick Team Joins with Master of None’s Yang to Develop Stories about America’s Immigrants

Views from the Edge

Kumail Nanjiani and Emily GordonThe husband-wife team that wrote the script for The Big Sick motion picture and Alan Yang, who helped create the TV series Master of None, have joined forces to develop a series telling immigrants’ stories.

Comedian Kumail Nanjiani and his wife, scriptwriter Emily Gordon, along with Lee Eisenberg will be the writers for Little America. Yang, will executive produce the series.

Little America, which is based on the true stories featured Epic Magazine and described as “a small, collective portrait of America’s immigrants — and thereby a portrait of America itself.”

Deadline says Nanjiani and Yang will tap into their families’ immigrant experiences for the project, which was picked up by Apple. Little America was ordered as a “Straight to series” as part of the computer company’s foray into TV production.

The TV series will go beyond the headlines to look at the funny, romantic, heartfelt, inspiring and unexpected lives of immigrants in America, at a time when their stories are more relevant than ever.

  1. RE: Big Sick Team joins with Master of None’s Yang to Develop Stories about America’s Immigrants: I have been performing my family’s immigration story for three years now. It follows 3 generations of one Chinese family who came in 1850 and started the fishing industry on Monterey Bay Area and who had to constantly reinvent themselves with each law passed against them. Plays to standing ovations around the country. Am finishing the book as well. My non-profit also has a workshop called ImmiGratitude whereby we teach what makes a good story, they write their immigration story, share it with each other after we teach presentation skills. After that they do collage art to represent their immigration story. Very powerful work comes out of our participants. http://www.ethnohtec.org. Indeed it is time to celebrate this country of immigrants. That is who we are. And it is also the AMERICAN legacy to disrespect immigrants with each wave. Time to change that!!
