Media Botches Pronunciation of Pyeongchang

Daegwanryeong Samyang farm landscape in Pyeongchang, one of the highlights of any visit to the area. But how do you pronounce Pyeongchang?

Something really bothered Kristen Sze, the Midday and 5pm New anchor at ABC7 in San Francisco.

The Taiwan-born Sze cringed when she heard the media pronounce the last syllable of Pyeongchang the way Michael Chang pronounces his last name.

Sze, who speaks fluent Mandarin and has passed on her language skills to her children, heard from her Korean friends that broadcasters were getting it wrong.

She sparked a debate within her own newsroom about the correct pronunciation, then she went to a bilingual Korean American journalist to set the record straight.

Sze’s actions got the attention of ABC 7 News Director Tracey Watkowski. By day’s end Monday, Watkowski had made her decision. The directive to the station’s anchors- all on air personnel should begin pronouncing Pyeongchang Pyeong chawng.
