Family Wins $5 Million in Wrongful Death Case

Rebecca Zahau

The family of the girlfriend of a San Diego billionaire has been awarded a $5 million judgment in their wrongful death case against the boyfriend’s brother.

A San Diego jury found Adam Shacknai liable for the death of Rebecca Zahau, reports the Times of San Diego.

Authorities had ruled Zahau’s death a suicide after she was found naked, bound and hanging from a rope.

The attorney for the Zahau family, Keith Greer, alleged Shacknai delivered four blows to Zahau’s head and sexually assaulted her.

News 10 reported that the San Diego Sheriff’s Department stands by its determination that Zahau killed herself.

“The Sheriff’s Department stands by the findings of the Medical Examiner’s Office and our investigators. These findings were supported by forensic evidence and medical examinations. We are always open to reviewing any evidence that could impact our conclusions. Additionally, we are also willing to meet with the Zahau Family to look at any new evidence that came out of the civil trial”

“Adam Shacknai doesn’t have money, This isn’t about money … [SDSO] should use their resources to do the job correctly,” Greer said to News 10.

Zahau’s tearful sister, Mary Zahau-Loehner, thanked all those “who helped her through this. No matter what happened to Rebecca, I can’t get her back. Our family can’t get her back, but hopefully people will know that she didn’t commit suicide,” she said to Fox 5.
