San Francisco Honors First Asian American Mayor

San Francisco’s mayor Ed Lee, who died suddenly last December from cardiac arrest, would have celebrated his 66th birthday this weekend.

In memory of the city’s first Asian American mayor, the Department of Public Works planted a magnolia tree dedicated to Lee near City Hall yesterday, as reported by SF Gate.

At the ceremony, acting mayor Mark Farrell, former mayor Willie Brown and Lee’s sister Linna Kitamura spoke about Lee’s accomplishments and personality, including his love of “corny jokes.”

“Ed was a simple kind of guy, so this tree-planting is very fitting,” said Kitamura to SF Gate. “No fuss, just a bit of soil, some water and some sunshine, and the tree will grow and soon beautiful white flowers will bloom, season after season.”

The tree is expected to blossom white flowers in the coming weeks.
