Muslim Woman Records Potential Hate Crime in California Coffee Shop

A California man verbally attacked a Muslim woman for her niqab, a religious head scarf covering the whole face except the eyes, at a Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf Cafe, according to this recently viral Twitter video.

The coffee shop’s on-duty supervisor also refused to serve him because he was “disrupting a public place and being very racist.”

The middle-aged white man, yet to be identified, appears to initiate the heated exchange by asking the woman, “Is this Halloween or something?”

The woman replies, “Why would you say that? … Do you know I’m a Muslim?”

The man admits he doesn’t like that she’s wearing a niqab: “I don’t like that because I don’t like your religion and it says to kill me and I don’t want to be killed by you, how’s that?”

A cafe bystander who overhears their conversation shouts at the man to “Get out of here! You f***ing racist.”

Before he leaves, the Muslim woman asks if he’s ever read the Qu’ran and if he is Christian. She tries to compare the context of Qu’ran’s lines on jihad with the Bible, “In your Bible, Jesus says to bring the people who don’t believe, to kill them in front of him.”

The video was originally posted by author CJ Werleman, who describes himself as a “recovering Islamaphobe.” In a later tweet, Werleman identifies the Bible passage (Luke 19:27) where “Jesus did use a parable to say, ‘But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.'”
