Asian woman in first LGBTQ relationship in Marvel Movie

Deadpool2The highly anticipated Deadpool 2 will feature the first openly gay relationship in a Marvel movie.

It’s not essential to the plot, but its there for all to see.

Shioli Kutsuna plays Yukio who’s in love with Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand), according to Movie Web

GLAAD released the following statement from its president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis.

“20th Century Fox and Marvel have finally given countless moviegoers around the world what they’ve longed to see – LGBTQ superheroes in a relationship who protect the world together,” said GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. “Negasonic and Yukio’s storyline is a milestone in a genre that too often renders LGBTQ people invisible, and should send a message to other studios to follow this example of inclusive and smart storytelling.”

Both Movie Web and Digital Spy hailed the on screen relationship as a breakthrough.

However, Digital Spy also added this caveat.

Yukio doesn’t do much other than giggle on screen and say hi. Can you say cute Asian girl stereotype?

The film does feature a number of Asian Pacific Islander actors.

Among those are Indian American actor Karan Soni, who returns as Deadpool’s taxi driver Dopinder, as well as Maori actor Julian Dennison,  and Chinese/British American actor Lewis Tan.

Deadpool 2 opens tomorrow.
