A Vietnamese American beaten in Vietnam by police during a protest a month ago has been ordered to stand trial, reports ABC News.
William Nguyen of Houston faces charges of disrupting a public place.
Think Progress reports the trial has been scheduled just days after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo discussed the case with Vietnamese officials during a diplomatic visit to Hanoi, Vietnam.
“The most important part is that the State Department refused to demand his release,” Nguyen’s sister, Victoria Nguyen, told ThinkProgress. “Human rights are blatantly being ignored.”
Will was part of a massive protest against new economic policies establishing economic zones to foreign companies. He was one of 150 people arrested. His family told ABC he has not been allowed to see a lawyer or talk to his family.
