Julie Chen felt she never fit in growing up and now she says her eight-year-old son, Charlie Moonves, is growing through the same identity crisis, reports US Magazine.

The host of Big Brother on CBS has not been shy talking about her identity and ethnicity.

“I just wanted to assimilate and look and sound like the other kids,” she told US.

It was difficult for her to speak Mandarin to her traditional parents. Now she sees Charlie going through the same thing.

“I know he’ll reach a stage where he’s going to regret not learning the language and speaking it fluently from a young age. He will want to get in touch with his Chinese roots,” she said.

In 2013, Chen made news when she revealed that early in her career she had eyelid surgery because her news director told her she would never succeed with Asian eyes.

In 2015, Chen allowed a film crew from TLC’s  Who Do you Think You Are to follow her journey back to China to trace her roots.

  1. RE: Julie Chen says Her son is Ashamed of his culture just like she once was: This is what happens if you let self-racial hatred infect you for too long. Your self-racial hatred will harm your future generations.

  2. RE: Julie Chen Says Her Son Is Ashamed of his Culture Just Like she Once Was: Self hate? Asians have self hate in the US because mainstream white society tells them asians are not as pretty, their culture and customs are despised. It is not only asians, it is people of color as well. There is an undeniable stigma to being different in a negative way. However, we are improving obviously, interracial marriage and children are on the rise.

  3. RE: Julie Chen Says Her son is ashamed of His Culture Just Like She Was:My problem with Julie Chen. She’s married to the head of the network. She could do lots of stuff .Look at Lisa Ling, I admire her a lot, Julie could act as a reporter and do specials or even a series addressing race in America . Instead she did a nothing show. On one hand it’s your life. On the other you’re in a powerful powerful position and if you don’t use it don’t complain later.
