Jon Chu Open to Taking Crazy Rich Asians to Broadway. Tops $200 Million at Box Office

Disney has made a gold mine taking its classic hits to Broadway.

Now Jon Chu is thinking he can bring Crazy Rich Asians under the lights of Broadway.

Chu told Variety he’s open to the idea.

“Maybe we combine a Chinese singer with an Asian American composer to put it together,” he said. “We have a big band — the band is on the stage itself so you can experience it like you’re at a party. We would have the best fashion. Jason Wu comes in and designs everything. You make an experience for the audience. It would be ridiculous.”

Through Monday, Crazy Rich Asians has taken in $160 million at the domestic box office, according to Box Office Mojo. World wide its cashed in for another $47 million. Not bad for a movie with a $30 million budget. The Warner Bros hit has given new life to the rom-com genre.

Talks are in the works for a sequel, but those details are still being worked out.
