Students at Washington University Complain about “Asians invading” Study Room

Asian bashing at Washington University in St. Louis

An undergraduate research assistant at Washington University in St. Louis is leading a productive discussion on race relations on campus.

It all started when a friend alerted Han Ju Seo that students at Washington University were complaining about the “Asians invading their study room.” That outraged Seo, so she posted a screen shot of the discussion on her Facebook page.

“Thanks for the reminder that no matter my citizenship, the years I’ve spent in America, and my proficiency in English, I’m always going to be a foreigner,” she wrote about the screen shots.

“No matter how much we excel in our careers, achieve incredible things, and work to the point of utter exhaustion we’re still unwanted. Go ahead and love my culture, love my food, and love my music; call me when I’m welcome.”

Seo was overwhelmed with the comments.

“When i posted this image yesterday I was not expecting this level of engagement. I am blown away by your messages of support and your personal stories of othering has moved me deeply,” she wrote in a follow up post.

Shortly after, she received an apology from one of the students involved. She encouraged her friends to keep the dialogue alive.

“There will be opposing views all around, and while I see both the positive and negative consequences of my actions, I still stand by my choice. The conversations, dialogue, and heart-to-hearts that have occurred have been eye-opening for (hopefully) not just me, and I have been deeply touched at the response of my community,” she wrote.

She has since written a follow up post encouraging people to share their stories.

“I have been relatively silent since my post last Tuesday, and in that time I have been in some deep reflection, conversations, and wrestling with myself and others. I was exposed to both the highest praise for my courage to speak up and cutting backlash for the choice that I made. I do not think I deserve either one of these. I am neither a hero or a bad person, I am just someone who wanted to be heard. So thank you to those who listened, who cared, and stood by me,” she said.

“Asian Americans are an intensely diverse and often ignored category of voices. I want our voices to be heard. Send your stories”

Her posts have since been amplified after also being published on Next Shark.

Seo describes herself as someone who “loves memes, but loves Jesus more.”

Her personal Facebook page features images of racism against Asian Americans and other people of color.
