Police in Fremont, California are investigating a possible hate crime in the city council race, reports the Mercury News.
City Council candidate Justin Sha discovered swastikas scribbled across his face on campaign signs.
“It really is something else to see a Nazi swastika etched onto a picture of your forehead,” Sha said.
The city is more than 50 percent Asian American. Sha’s father first discovered the defaced campaign sign and texted pictures to his son.
“So saddened this could happen. Well, it’s my son, of course I’m emotional, but to anybody else still it’s not right. It’s not right,” Ron said to
ABC7.
The TV station also reported that Islamphobic incidents have recently occurred in Fremont’s school board race.
“Last week I got a series of hateful comments posted on to my Facebook account. They were very anti-Muslim, bigoted, horrible comments calling me all sorts of names,” said Fahria Khan, a District Board Trustee candidate.
Khan said there’s room for political disagreement, but incidents like this cross the line.
