George Washington University Students Launch Drive for Asian American Studies

Students at George Washington University in the nation’s capital are working with faculty to push for an Asian American Studies minor

The campus newspaper, the GW Hatchet reports the minor would include courses about cultural representation, literature and immigration.

“A minor in Asian studies is important for students like myself to feel like they are being heard and that we do have a voice,” said Jeremy Lee, president of the Asian American Students Association.

Michael Tapscott, director of the Multicultural Student Services Center, and Caroline Laguerre-Brown, the vice provost for diversity, equity and community engagement, are working with the students.

“GW is a diverse campus that thrives on having a broad range of perspectives,” said Lauguerre-Brown. “It’s great to see a group of students conducting research to propose an Asian American minor.”

Supporters have launched a photo hashtag of #GWAAsAmStudies
