Elderly Chinatown Man Attacked May Have Suffered Permanent Brain Damage

Yen Jit WongOne month after a suspect randomly attacked a Chinatown man in Chicago on a stroll, his family fears he may have suffered permanent brain damage.

WLS reports Yen Jit Wong is now recovering at a rehabilitation center, but must still be fed through a tube and can’t stay awake more than two hours a day.

Authorities say Alexander Taylor, 45, sucker punched the 91 year old, sending him pummeling to the ground. Taylor faces three felony counts in the incident.

The Chicago Tribune reported Taylor has a number of convictions for other violent attacks, including some on senior citizens. Authorities say his behavior has been erratic since being arrested. They detail incidents of Taylor smearing feces on the door of his cell and flooding his cell with toilet water.

On the day of the attack, an officer saw him behaving in a threatening matter.

“He was acting out. He was not hurting anyone, but he was in a very threatening manner … talking at the sky, talking at the sidewalk and frightening people,” said Sgt. Michael Bazarek to the Tribune.

Bazarek followed Taylor and said he witnessed the suspect suddenly punch Wong without provocation.

“I just hope criminals like these stay off the streets. They don’t contribute to anything but pain and grief,” Wong’s grandson Lau said about Taylor to WLS. “We get the sense that our grandfather will never be the same.”

  1. RE: Elderly Chinatown Man Attacked May have Suffered Permanent Brain Damage: So so sad. Hoping his recovery will be full even tho slow.

As for the man who punched him, he is obviously schizophrenic and society and our governments are to blame for closing mental hospitals in the ‘80s and throwing these very ill people onto the street without any resources. The people of this country need to class sue our government for not doing as the constitution commands – to care for the well-being of all its citizens.
