Republicans in Tarrant County, Texas are looking toward a January vote to remove a Muslim American leader within its ranks.
Those in favor say the push to oust Shahid Shafi from his Vice Chair position is about whether he is “connected to Islam terrorist groups,” reports the Star-Telegram.
Republicans approved Shafi’s appointment to the post earlier this year, but the GOP’s Dorrie O’Brien is now asking the party to reconsider.
“This small despicable group is whipping up a frenzy. That’s where this gets dangerous,” said Kelly Canon of Arlington. “They are doing this guilt by association crap and it goes against everything I go by. You have to judge a person by their deeds, not their religion.”
Canon has vowed to resign from her leadership positions within the GOP if Shafi is let go.

Shafi is urging supporters to remain optimistic.
“There are good people around. You have to keep knocking on doors until you find them,” he said.
Shafi became a citizen in 2009. Voters elected him five years later to the Southlake city council.
