Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) told a gathering Saturday that she will decide this month whether she will run for president, reports NBC News.
The first term Senator has been long rumored to be positioning herself for a run, but this is her first official acknowledgment that she is seriously considering it. She told those at the Know Your Value conference in San Francisco that it will be a family decision.
“It’s a very serious decision. Over the holiday, I will make that decision with my family,” she told Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski. “Let’s be honest, it’s going to be ugly. When you break things, it’s going to be painful. You get cut and you bleed.”
600 women attended the The Know Your Value conference, according to NBC Bay Area. The conference is aimed at helping woman get what they want at work and at home.
Harris has been crisscrossing the country, making appearances at early primary states. This has added to the speculation that she would run.
“I think Americans want in their next leader someone who will be honest, speak truth, who will have a vision for our country that is unburdened by what we’ve been, but instead can see who we can be,” Harris said, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. “And they want in their leader someone who will paint a picture of the future in which everyone can see themselves.”
Harris’s mother is from India. Her father is from Jamaica.
