Bao Nominated for Best Short Film

The Academy nominated Bao, a Pixar short film about a mother’s evolving relationship with her son, for Best Short Film. According to ABC News, the short film is the first Pixar short directed by a woman, Domee Shi.

The short film uses a story about a Chinese dumpling that comes to life to illustrate how the relationships between mothers and their children change as the children grow up. Bao was screened in theaters ahead of Incredibles 2. Many said they enjoyed the short film more than the movie they came to see.

Shi told ABC News that the short film was a “love letter to her heritage.”

Bao is about a lonely, empty-nester Chinese mom who gets a second shot at motherhood when one of her dumplings comes to life as a little, gurgling, baby dumpling boy,” Shi said.

When developing the short, Shi thought a lot about the experience of her own parents, who are empty nesters. Her parents immigrated to Canada when she was two.

“Ever since I was little, they’ve always treated me like their precious, little dumpling, always protecting me, making sure I’m safe, making sure I never went out and never had a life outside of their little realm,” Shi said in an interview with Gold Derby.

Seven years ago, Shi was just an intern at Pixar. Now, she is the first woman to direct an Oscar-nominated, Pixar short film.
