The list of Oscar nominations completely omitted Crazy Rich Asians, despite the film’s critical acclaim and box office success. The nominations were announced this morning at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater, with Kumail Nanjiani and Tracee Ellis Ross hosting.
Crazy Rich Asians captivated audiences around the world last summer, making made over $238 million worldwide. Critics praised the film for its acting, cinematography, and set design. Activists praised it for aiding in the fight to diversify Hollywood. It won the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Comedy.
Despite the film’s excellent performance in the reviews and at other award shows, many film buffs were not expecting Crazy Rich Asians to be nominated for the Oscars’ biggest prizes. Laura Bradley, a writer for Vanity Fair, said in an op-ed that the film’s chances for being nominated for “above-the-line” awards were “a long-shot,” especially because Hollywood branded the film as a rom-com. However, Bradley said that the film could have easily been nominated for Best Production Design or Best Costumes. The film’s screenplay, Bradley argued, also deserved recognition.
Fans and critics alike took to Twitter to express their disappointment.
