Daniel Dae Kim Returned to Prime Time TV on Monday Night

Daniel Dae Kim returned to prime time television last night on an episode of The Good Doctor. According to Cinema Blend, it has been two years since Kim left his last major network television role on Hawaii 5-0.

Kim has been an executive producer on The Good Doctor since 2017. Last night he made his debut on the show as the new chief of surgery, Dr. Jackson Han.

In last night’s episode, Dr. Han clashed with the main character, Shaun Murphy who is played by Freddie Highmore. Han told other surgeons he believes that Murphy’s autism would always limit his surgical abilities, TV Line reports. By the end of the episode, Han had already made a call to put an end to Murphy’s surgical residency.

Kim admitted in an interview with EW that he was nervous about the role.

“I know the quality of David Shore’s writing and I wanted to do it justice,” Kim tells EW. “I also wanted to be a good scene partner to all my fellow actors and people that I’d known in a producing capacity, so I wanted to service the show. Because of that, I felt a little bit more butterflies in my stomach than I expected.”

Kim told EW that having Highmore as a director helped calm those nerves. Highmore similarly said that the cast’s familiarity with Kim made shooting the episode easier.

Most fans of the show praised Kim’s acting, but expressed ill-feelings towards his character.

Last night’s episode was the first installment of Kim’s four-episode character arc. Dr. Han’s battle with Shaun Murphy will continue next Monday.
