First time nominees Domee Shi and Becky Neiman won an Academy Award tonight for their animated short, Bao.

Shi based her movie in part on her relationship with her own mother. In Bao, an empty nest mom adjusts to life without her only child.

“To all the nerdy girls out there who hide behind your sketch book, don’t be afraid to tell your stories,” said Shi to applause. “You’re going to freak people out, but you’re going to connect to them too, and that’s an amazing feeling to have.”

She directed and wrote the film and Neiman produced it along with Pete Docter and John Lasseter. The movie opened before Incredibles 2.

“To my little Baos Lucy and Deanne, none of this would be possible without you,” said Neiman who gave a nod to her daughters.

Shi is a rising star at Pixar and is reportedly working on her first animated full length feature.
