A father is being called a hero in the New Zealand massacre after acting as a human shield from bullets to protect his two-year-old son’s body, reports The Independent.

Zulfirman Syah is in stable condition after emergency surgery for bullet wounds over several parts of his body. His son Averroes escaped with minor injuries.

“My husband shielded our son during the attack at Linwood Islamic Centre, which caused him to receive most of the bullets and much more complex injuries than our son,” Syah’s wife, Alta Marie, said on Facebook.

“He is in stable condition following the extensive exploratory and reconstructive surgery.”

Marie is reportedly an American citizen.

She says the road to recovery has been long. Marie requested privacy for the family. Those who want to help can contribute to the family’s Go Fund Me page. So far, $27,000 has been raised. The family recently moved to New Zealand from Indonesia, Syah’s homeland. He also goes by the name of Jul.
