Robocall Scam Targeting Chinese Bilking Victims for Millions of Dollars

New York Chinatown

We first reported this scam victimizing Chinese immigrants back in June. Robocallers posing as members of the Chinese consulate demand immediate payment for a crime linked to a criminal investigation.

This rip off shows no signs of slowing down. WHIO reports that federal authorities now say the scammers have defrauded their victims out of a combined $40 million.

Investigators say they’ve received 350 complaints with each victims losing an average of $164,000.

The ploy works like this. The callers identify themselves as members of the consulate. They say they received a package addressed to them at the consulate, but that the consulate has been tied to criminal elements. The victims are told they can make their problem go away by making a money transfer, credit card payment or providing bank account information.

In a similar scam, the caller claims the victim owes the Chinese government money and again, demands immediate payment. The Chinese consulate say they would never request personal information over the phone or initiate a wire transfer.

If you get such a call-hang up and contact local authorities or the Chinese consulate.
