Protestors disrupt speech by Yale’s President

Yale

Protestors interrupted a speech this weekend by Yale President Peter Salovey at a dinner celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Asian American Student Alliance.

The Yale Daily News reports more than 50 people entered the room holding signs showing their support for ethnic studies. About 80 people already in the audience stood up in solidarity.

Late last month, 13 professors from Yale’s Program of Ethnicity, Race and Migration resigned in protest over what they say is a lack of support from the University.

“I am very supportive of the professors who have been involved and with the issues that they raised,” Salovey said to the Yale Daily. “In fact, we have been talking about those issues for quite some time. You have my word we’ll get them worked out.”

He promised the situation would be worked out before the end of his term.

“I felt very empowered by how much the community pulled together in that one critical moment,” Rita Wang ’19 of the Coalition for Ethnic Studies at Yale, said.
