Alyssa Tungul, a junior high school teacher in Edmonton, is charged with sexual assault of a child under the age of 16, CBC News reports.
The alleged incident occurred back in 2016 when Tungul was teaching at H.E. Beriault Catholic Junior High. Police started investigating in November 2018 and Tungul was immediately removed from the classroom.
Dr. Wanda Polzin, a psychologist, questions if there are any other victims in the same matter.
“My belief and understanding is that people who are put in positions of power — who are being able to have easy access to children within the community — often do have offending behaviours not just with one child, but others as well,” she said.
According to Hopclear, Tungul will remain suspended during the investigation. She is scheduled to appear in court on July 24th.
