Searching to get sequel sans John Cho. NBC’s Sunnyside with Kal Penn promising

Searching

The sleeper summer hit Searching from director Aneesh Chaganty will get a sequel, reports Deadline. The thriller told entirely through the lens of social media will return with a completely new story line and without the original cast which featured John Cho and Debra Messing.

The film bought by Sony for $5 million grossed $75 million worldwide. It will return with its original creative team.

“We all see this second installment as a wonderful opportunity to tell another original tech-driven thriller. With all due respect to Taken, this is not Taken,” said Chaganty, according to Digital Spy.

So far no word on the cast or release date of the sequel.

Meanwhile one of the promising new television shows of the fall season will star John Cho’s old sidekick, Kal Penn, from the Harold and Kumar franchise.

NBC’s Sunnyside features Penn as Garrett Modi, a disgraced New York City Councilman who seeks to redeem himself by helping immigrants attain the American dream.

“I remember, when we did the first ‘Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle’ and there was a question of ‘Will people actually like it? Are people okay with there being two Asian Americans in a lead in a buddy comedy that also happens to feature marijuana and hamburgers?’ And it did well everywhere in the country because audiences really like characters they can identify with,” Penn said to Vital Thrills.

“They like plot lines that they maybe haven’t had the chance to experience before, enter worlds that they haven’t seen. That’s what I love about comedy, and I think that’s what we are hoping to achieve with this. So, yeah, we are hoping that our reach will be very wide.”

Sunnyside premiers September 26.
