The UCI Center for Critical Korean Studies has partnered with Hyundai Motors America to display Afro-Korean hip hop culture in an upcoming festival. According to UCI news, the event will feature artists like Tiger JK, Yoon Mi-rae, Bizzy and Kurtis Blow.
Tiger JK, Yoon Mi-rae and Bizzy are rappers in South Korea. Together, they are in a group called MFBTY. The members are considered legendary hip hop veterans in the country, according to Vulture.
Kurtis Blow will take part in the special opening act. He is widely known for hits like The Fat Boys and Run DMC.
“This conference will discuss issues of both identities of Koreans and African Americans in Korean hip-hop, addressing race in hip-hop in new ways through tackling formal linguistic analysis of the genre, discussing the impact of Korean locality on hip-hop, and outlining its evolution in the Korean musical context,” said Kyung Hyun Kim, the founder director of the UCI Center for Critical Korean Studies, in an interview with the UCI School of Humanities.
This event consists of both a conference and a concert at the UCI campus. The conference will take place on October 7th from 8:30 A.M. to 5:30 P.M. in Room 1030 at the Humanities Gateway. Then, the concert will follow on the same day from 7 to 10 PM at the Irvine Barclay Theatre.
