Kacey Musgraves angers Vietnamese fans with cultural gaffe

VNExpress published this screen shot from Kacey Musgraves’ Instagram page of the country singer wearing an ao dai without the trousers

Country superstar Kacey Musgraves so far isn’t responding to fans outraged that she inappropriately wore a traditional Vietnamese garment, an ao dài, without the trousers.

Instead she chose to show off her long legs which many Vietnamese said displayed a “lack of cultural awareness” and was “disrespectful.”

VNExpress reported the photo from Thursday’s concert in Dallas appeared on Musgraves’ official Instagram page. That photo appears to have been deleted.

A fan page, however, referenced the controversy asking fans to direct their comments to Musgraves’ page and not hers.

“I just wanted to say once again I am not Kacey. This is a fan page and if you are upset with Kacey about the outfit she wore please direct those feelings to her not me,” kaceymusgravesstans wrote.

Here is just a sampling of reaction to Musgraves’ fashion choice.

“Oh yikes, yikes, Kacey Musgraves. “That’s not how you wear our traditional clothes. Yikes,” posted one.

“What the f*ck is Kacey Musgraves doing? Our culture is not something you dirty b*tch can appropriate,” said another.

The photo below shows how the ao dai is traditionally worn in Vietnamese culture.
