On Tuesday, Virginia elected the first Muslim American Senator to the Virginia Senate. Democrat Ghazala Hashmi defeated Republican incumbent Sen. Glen Sturtevant (R-Richmond) Virginia’s 10th District Senator race, ABC 13 News reports.
Before running for office, Hashmi worked in the Virginia community college system for decades, according to ABC 8 News. Her previous work experience influenced her campaign’s positions on education.
Hashmi thanked her supporters on Facebook.
“Today we sent a message that the status quo is no longer accepted,” Hashmi wrote. “Thank you all for your support and passion in helping me become the next state Senator for Virginia’s 10th District! I couldn’t be more honored to be apart of the change to come for Virginia.”
Hashmi added that the victory did not belong to her alone.
