What we know about the shooter who died in the California school shooting

Nathaniel Berhow

Police in Santa Clarita, California say they still have no motive for what triggered the 16-year-old boy who died Friday, one day after killing two students and injuring several others, reports USA Today.

Nathaniel Berhow used the last bullet in his .45 caliber semi-automatic weapon to shoot himself in the head.

Berhow’s father, Mark, died in 2017 and according to one neighbor who talked with USA Today, had been trying to reestablish a relationship with his dad prior to his death. His father was White and his mother, Mami Matasuura, Japanese. The father reportedly owned several hunting rifles. According to Heavy, he had a history of alcoholism and died of a heart attack. Family from Japan is flying in for the boy’s funeral. The couple filed for divorce in 2016.

CBS reports police do believe Berhow planned the shooting since he saved the last bullet for himself. Authorities did not find a diary or manifesto and say he hasn’t been linked to any ideology or group.

Fellow students Gracie Muehlberger, 15, and Dominic Blackwell, 14, died. Three others injured in the attack are expected to survive.

Heavy also reports Nathaniel ran track for Saugus High. He has also been a Cub Scout and Boy Scout.

“As far as I could tell from the recent days that I’ve seen him, he was looking kind of down and I guess just kind of depressed about something,” the student told FOX 11 Los Angeles. “I didn’t really ask him what it was that he was depressed about, but from what I could tell he was different. He wasn’t acting like himself.”
