Fans outraged about the sidelining of Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico in The Rise of Skywalker will likely cheer this news. Director Jon Chu of Crazy Rich Asians fame is publicly lobbying to do a Star Wars spinoff for Disney Plus based on Kelly Marie Tran’s character, Rose Tico.
Chu took to Twitter to make this simple plea.
He has been a factory of hits. Chu is behind such major projects as Now You See Me 2, GI Joe Retaliation and the upcoming In the Heights, based on Lin Manuel Miranda’s Broadway hit of the same name.
Judging from fan reaction, a Rose Tico spinoff would be a hit.
Kelly Marie Tran was the first woman of color to be cast in a significant role in the Star Wars saga.
Many Star Wars fans expressed disappointment that Tran’s character only appeared in just 76 seconds of The Rise of Skywalker after taking a major role in The Last Jedi.
Rose Tico quickly rose in popularity among Star War devotees and fans rallied behind her when trolls forced Tran off social media after vicious attacking her with racist venom.
