Chinese Americans gathered in Houston yesterday evening to celebrate the Lunar New Year and showcase traditional Chinese culture at the Spring Festival gala.
Locals flocked to the Houston Chinese Civic Center to watch classical performances like Peking Opera, dancing, and singing Chinese and American songs, according to Xinhua. Over 1,000 people watched the “2020 Embracing Spring” evening show, the largest of its kind in Houston.
Director Ji Jiajin said that the gala aimed to spread Chinese New Year customs to both the Chinese American communities in Houston and their neighbors.
“We chose some performances on purpose,” he said. “Chinese instrument, traditional costumes, Peking Opera and ancient Chinese poems were all selected elements in this show to represent our splendid culture.”
The Chinese Consulate General and Chinese communities in Houston helped organize the show.
The lunar calendar, which is still followed by many Asian cultures, begins its new year on Jan. 25. On the Chinese zodiac, this year marks the Year of the Rat.
