A film about the political journey of an activist and rapper turned politician has been nominated for an Oscar for best documentary short.
St. Louis Superman is directed by Sami Khan and Smitra Mundhra. In a year when once again the Academy failed to recognize any women directors in the best director category, Mudhra’s nomination is noteworthy.
Her film with fellow Indian American Khan and Malaysian producer Poh Si Teng won honors in 2019 at the AFI Docs Festival, Indy Shorts International Film Festival, Traverse City Film Festival and Tribeca Film Festival.
The film evolves around Bruce Franks, Jr, an African American activist who won election to the Missouri House of Representatives in a predominantly White and Republican district.
