An economics professor in Iowa is under arrest and accused of tying up and gagging her husband before killing him, reports the Des Moines, Register.

Gowun Park faces first degree murder and kidnap charges and is being held on $5 million bail in the murder of Sung Woo Nam .

Police say the professor from Simpson University in West Des Moines, IA cancelled midterms days before her arrest citing personal reasons.

“Nam was confined to a room and bound to a chair, unable to freely move about and free himself, ultimately leading to his death,” court documents quoted by the campus paper, the Simpsonian said.

“Ms. Park’s actions and in-actions were directly responsible for Mr. Nam’s death. The injuries sustained by Mr. Nam were not self-inflicted. Ms. Park stated that the only people present during the duration of the events were her and her husband, Sung Woo Nam,” those court documents went on to say.

A motive is unclear at this time, nor is it clear why her husband was bound and gagged.

“She was one of the sweetest ladies I’ve ever known,” said student Thomas Mussig who had Park as an advisor. “This is really tough,” he said to the Register.

Authorities found Nam unconscious after responding to a 911 call. They say a couple of hours before finding him, Nam begged Park to free him but she refused.
