Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI), the last of three AAPI candidates for president, has dropped out of the race, reports Vox.
While a long shot and largely ignored by the media, Gabbard showed endurance by being one of the last of 25 original candidates to drop out for the Democratic nomination.
Only former Vice President Joe Biden (D-DE) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-VT) remain.
Gabbard, who was one of the first Democrats to endorse Sanders during his 2016 run, surprised many today by endorsing his rival, Biden.
“After Tuesday’s election, it is clear that Democratic Primary voters have chosen Vice President Joe Biden to be the person who will take on President Trump in the general election,” she said.
“I know Vice President Biden and his wife and am grateful to have called his son Beau a friend who also served in the National Guard. Although I may not agree with the Vice President on every issue, I know that he has a good heart and is motivated by his love for our country and the American people. I’m confident that he will lead our country guided by the spirit of aloha — respect and compassion — and thus help heal the divisiveness that has been tearing our country apart.
“So today, I’m suspending my presidential campaign, and offering my full support to Vice President Joe Biden in his quest to bring our country together.”
Gabbard’s term in Congress is running out this year and she is not running for reelection. Once a rising star in the Democratic Party, it is unclear where her political future will head.
Sanders, who got off to a good start, and at one point had been the front runner in the presidential race, has faded since his poor performance in North Carolina, and then Super Tuesday. Many analysts are now wondering when Sanders will drop out of the race, although he has not yet indicated he will do so.
He has, however, stated he will give his full support to the eventual Democratic nominee to defeat President Donald Trump.
