Indian American Saritha Komatireddy was recently nominated by President Donald Trump to be U.S. District Judge for the Eastern District of New York.
She was among 30 candidates for federal court judge positions whose nominations were sent to the White House on May 4, according to the White House.
After graduating from Harvard Law School, Komatireddy clerked under current U.S. Justice Brett Kavanaugh when he served in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
“I considered it a special privilege to train under a man who had such fundamental respect for the law and a complete commitment to getting it right,” she said.
This statement was made months before Kavanaugh was accused of sexual assault in 2018. She has not made further comments since Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing or when alleged victim Christine Blasey Ford testified against him.

In addition to being Deputy Chief of General Crimes for the Eastern District of New York’s U.S. Attorney’s office, Komatireddy is a lecturer at Columbia Law School.

Komatireddy is set to replace Judge Joseph Frank Bianco, who was promoted to the U.S. Court of Appeals’ Second Circuit last May.
Trump had announced his intent to nominate her on February 12. So far, Trump has appointed a record of more than a quarter of the federal judges on the appeals courts. Most of these appointees have been conservative, White men.
Komatireddy’s nomination is currently pending before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
