American attitudes toward China worsen during the coronavirus pandemic

Two new polls out indicate views about China by Americans is declining during the coronavirus pandemic.

A poll taken March 3-29 by the Pew Research Center found 66% of Americans polled describe their opinion of China as unfavorable. This compares to 47% in 2018.

72% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents today share this negative view versus about 62% of Democrats.

A separate poll taken by Harris taken April 3-5 revealed most Americans don’t trust China with the way its handled the pandemic. According to the Washington Post, just 23% of Americans believe Chinese President Xi is a trustworthy source of information about the virus. 53% trust the White House and 60% the media.

This is good news for President Trump who has made blaming China for the pandemic a key reelection strategy.

Trump has gone so far as to say the pandemic was manufactured in a Chinese lab. It’s a theory also supported by his Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, a respected member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, however said yesterday there is no evidence to support this theory, reported the Huff Post.

“If you look at the evolution of the virus in bats, and what’s out there now is very, very strongly leaning toward this [virus] could not have been artificially or deliberately manipulated,” Fauci said. “A number of very qualified evolutionary biologists have said that everything about the stepwise evolution over time strongly indicates that it evolved in nature and then jumped species.

“That means it was in the wild to begin with,” he said. “That’s why I don’t get what they’re talking about [and] why I don’t spend a lot of time going in on this circular argument.”

US Intelligence Agencies have said the same thing.

China, itself, has ridiculed the US response to the pandemic. Chinese sponsored media recently released a video using Legos to make the point.

  1. RE: American attitudes toward China worsen during the coronavirus pandemic: Hate the Communist Chinese government but not the Chinese people or any Asian people. Most Asians all over the world don’t like the Communist Chinese government so hating on Asians won’t help America’s cause on confronting China. It will just drive people to view both countries unfavorably.
