Police Searching for Suspect who Assaulted Asian Woman at a Bus Stop in Vancouver

Police are now turning to the public to help them identify a suspect who attacked a young Asian woman in Vancouver last month, according to Vancouver is Awesome.

On April 12, the 22-year-old woman was approached at a bus stop near Granville and West Pender Streets. The suspect, unprovoked, punched the woman in the face and then fled the scene.

The incident was caught on camera. Officials hope the footage will help them catch the suspect, who is described as a white male in his mid 20s with a medium build. He was wearing a black t-shirt with a deer emblem on the front.

“We are investigating this as a stranger assault and the motive is unknown,” Sgt. Aaron Roed said.

Roed said officials are not sure whether or not the attack was race-related, CityNews Vancouver reports.

“For what is going on around the world right now, we’re not ruling anything out,” Roed said.

The Vancouver Police said that they have noticed an increase in reports of anti-Asian incidents and crimes.

“We are working with the community, the Chinese community, in trying to notify them that this isn’t going to be acceptable. We are investigating all acts of hate crime,” Roed said, according to CityNews Vancouver.

Roed also condemned the act and said the police would not tolerate such crimes.

“This is a disgusting act, an assault on an innocent person,” Roed said of the recent assault. “We don’t want to see this type of crime happen to anybody in any community around our city or anywhere in Metro Vancouver. We’re not going to tolerate this, and if this is a hate crime, we’ll be investigating it as that.”

Police are asking anyone with information about this crime to call the VPD Major Crime Section at 604-717-2541 or CrimeStoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
