Yaling Chan describes herself as a nerdy creative professional. The New Yorker has been working in marketing and sales in Greater New York area since 2015. Perhaps nothing she has experienced could prepare her for what hit her this week.
Chan reached out to Alien Fresh Jerky hoping to do business and the response stunned her.
“Not interested in doing business with any oriental people at this time,” came the response under the name of Luis Ramallo, founder of Alien Fresh Jerky.
“Whatever you come from, not interest at all, unsubscribe me from your site and do not contact me again,” the message continued.
Chan posted the remark on her Facebook page and received much support from her friends. The post went viral which caught the attention of Alien Fresh Jerky.

Ramallo requested a phone call with Chan to apologize to her. He explained he doesn’t speak English well and misunderstood the message from her.
Chan says she’s not interested in an apology or talking to Ramallo. Instead she chose to thank her friends for their support.
“I wanted to thank everyone for their kind words (and less than kind words ?) and say that I really f*cking appreciate you all for coming through and being just the best people ever, from my close friends all the way to the people who’ve never even met me. If I had the emotional capacity to cry, I’d probably be crying right now. I wanted to make clear my gratitude and love for all of you and the support you’ve shown me. It truly is incredible. Please be kind to yourselves as well in this time and stay healthy, and safe.”

I do business with people who email me in a language I don’t read or understand and I email back in English. I depend heavily on Google Translate to understand the gist of their emails. We use simple words and sentence structures.
If he wasn’t racist, why bring race into it at all? If he didn’t know the meaning of the word, why use it? If he didn’t know English well and didn’t know the meaning of the word and still used it, he’s just coming off as a complete idiot.
Besides, there was a interview of him speaking decent English on Youtube and they took it down after someone brought it up.

Also, ignorant of you to assume all Asian Americans hate Latinos. I’m Asian Am and my boyfriend is Mexican Am and our race has never been and will never be an issue. It’s this kind of systemic prejudice that should be addressed and remediate within ourselves as well.
I wish Ms. Chan and Mr. Ramallo can work out their difference. As Mr. George Floyd has proven there is no room for racism in this country.
