Arkansas hospital condemns xenophobic remarks of staffer

St. Vincent Hospital in Little Rock, AR has confirmed that one of its associates posted a meme on social media which labeled those who speak a foreign language as “corona carriers.”

The hospital which was founded by the Sisters of Charity says it “has addressed the matter with the individual.”

“CHI (Catholic Health Initiative) St. Vincent is aware of an offensive social media post by an individual associated with our institution. Their comments do not reflect the values or policies of CHI St. Vincent or our healing ministry. Our leadership team has addressed this matter directly with the individual,” the hospital said in a statement.

The hospital did not specify what action it took or disclose the name of the individual. However, some on social media assumed the associate has not been fired.

“It’s unacceptable that you would continue to trust someone handling patient care who has such a bias against certain patients,” wrote one on the hospital’s Facebook page. “You keeping this individual gainfully employed only proves that you too hold those same values associated with that individual.”

“If she’s still employed then it absolutely does reflect on your values. Your patients should feel safe, not discriminated against,” responded another.

Another wrote, “As someone that speaks a different language that she apparently cannot stand, I will take my business somewhere else, along with my friends and family.”

Very few who commented came to the defense of the hospital. One person, however, did write “Why is everyone so quick to assume that CHI St. Vincent didn’t handle this individual’s actions how you all seem to deem appropriate? I can tell you that I trust our administrators and nurse leaders whole heartedly and know that they have done what is best for our patients.”
