Militant groups call for boycott of Chinese businesses to protest treatment of Blacks in China

A coalition of militant groups in the U.S. is calling for a boycott of Chinese businesses in the United States to put pressure on the Chinese embassy to deal with discrimination against Blacks in that country.

The groups include Black Empowerment, Black Lawyers for Justice, the New Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, Original Black Panthers of Milwaukee, Black Rights Matter, Movement for Black Power (MBP); Hawaii Pan-African Association; Nubians United For Defense (NUFD); Justice League United (JUL) along with local Pastors, and over 30 local community groups.

They are protesting the suffering from vicious human rights violations in China; anti-Black racism of Africans living in China; supplying the Black community with poor quality and substandard food; exploiting the local retail market; refusing to hire Blacks; rude and disrespectful treatment; and failure to assist community organizations.

Numerous Asian Americans on social media have commented on the boycott campaign , calling it misdirected and pointing out that Chinese Americans have little to do with what goes on in China.

One community organizer in San Francisco described the groups involved in the protest as “fringe,” but said also said “We know fringe groups can still effectively twist the issues adding to the anti-China choir. Of course, the treatment of Africans in China is deplorable too.”

The groups held a news conference in front of the Chinese Embassy in Washington, DC to announce their campaign. Protests were held jointly in Atlanta, North Carolina, Michigan, New York, Hawaii, Houston, Florida, Missouri, Wisconsin, Maryland, and Virginia.

  1. RE: Militant groups call for boycott of Chinese businesses to protest treatment of Blacks in China: It would be better if they took their grievances to the U.N. or contact one of AAPI associations to get advice on who to contact at the Embassy

  2. RE: Militant groups call for boycott of Chinese businesses to protest treatment of Blacks in China: I do not contest the fact that our brethren across the ocean have behaved poorly and In an unjustified Manner but this effort is misdirected. It the same as blaming the Issei and Nisei Japanese for initiating the attack on Pearl Harbor and bringing the US into WW2. There is little relation between Chinese Americans and the Chinese mainland government.
Cross community education would be a far better way to deal with tensions between the impacted communities.

  3. RE: Militant groups call for boycott of Chinese businesses to protest treatment of Blacks in China: This is getting scary – all this resentment and anger – misdirected but – still there. And, there is some truth to some of their complaints: how many Chinese businesses hire Blacks? Our food is not substandard – mostly vegetables – but there is racism between many 1st and 2nd generation Chinese and Blacks. So, whether misdirected or not, we do need some inter-racial dialogue for sure.
