Police in San Leandro near San Francisco arrested a woman accused of posting racist letters on doors and other public places, reported the San Francisco Chronicle.
Authorities says the woman they identify as Nancy Arechiga, 52, posted the letters on at least five homes.
One of the letters read “Because we consider you’re (sic) a stranger, one bad person for this country, leave, go far away, go back to your country…in this place no Asian (sic) allowed.”
Images of a woman posting the letters and the letters themselves have been shared on social media.
CBS5 reports Arechiga has been booked into Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, but was released due to emergency overcrowding and safe distancing measures being taken due to the coronavirus.
One San Leandro resident whose brother found one of the letters expressed outrage.
“It was shocking and the whole family was really shaken up at it. I can’t comprehend hatefulness reading this letter send chills down my spine.” says Trihn to ABC7, who asked that her full name not be used.
“San Leandro is a community of beautifully diverse people, who share a common desire to live in harmony and free from intimidation,” San Leandro police Lt. Isaac Benabou said in a statement. “We welcome people’s rights to express themselves but not in a manner that infringes upon a community’s sense of security and well-being.”
San Leandro Mayor Pauline Cutter also released a statement on Facebook saying “The City of San Leandro is committed to being a welcoming place for everyone. There is no place for hate in our community.”
